Mark 4:40 – Unwavering Faith

Mark 4:40

35 That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.”

36 Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him.

37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped.

38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

40 He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

41 They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

Walking in Faith: Reflections on Mark 4:35-41

Although the passage demonstrates the power that Jesus has over creation, the power to even calm the storm, it ultimately serves as a metaphor for the figurative storms in our life. In times of testing, in times of winds, of trials and tribulations, will we be like the disciples, doubting God during that time? But would God really care so little about us? Of course not.

Just like how God takes care of the sparrows or the lilies of the field, He will absolutely take care of us. However, during the times when it is difficult, that is when we need to lean into God more. Our faith needs to be sincere, tried, and true, unwavering in the midst of all circumstances. But that of course takes time and prayer, believing and trusting in the power of the God who can calm both the physical and figurative storms.

Daily Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

In the midst of the storms in our life, help us to turn to You each and every time, to recognize Your sovereignty and power over all these things. Give us the strength and perseverance to overcome whatever trials and tribulations may come our way, to even strengthen our faith in You even during those times. May we look to You as our source of peace and stability, knowing that You are always in control.

In Jesus’ name, we pray,

Amen.
